After going down 6-4 to the Winnipeg Jets in which the Flyers got dominated in the very beginning, they looked to come out and play a solid game vs the Carolina Hurricanes tonight.  They knew the would be without all-star Jaromir Jagr (groin) again as well as captain Chris Pronger (virus) and fellow defenseman Braydon Coburn (upper-body) due to injuries.  It turned out to be a long night, though, without them.  It hurt big time on the usually outstanding Flyers PK too.

With about 6 and a half minutes left in the 1st, Alexei Ponikarovsky scored on a powerplay  after taking a pass from Chad LaRose while standing alone in the crease.  Not long after, they struck again.  This time it was Jeff Skinner with only 15 seconds left, with a real pretty goal, doing a spin move against Kimmo Timonen then slipping it inside the right post.  Just like that, the Flyers were down 2-0 going into the locker room.

You know Coach Peter Laviolette let them have it during the intermission, and James van Riemsdyk must have been listening.  After Bryzgalov made an impressive save on Eric Staal, the play went back up the ice and JVR attempted a wrap around after an offensive zone face-off win by Giroux 1:45 into the 2nd.  2-1.

The Flyers momentum quickly disappeared though, as Chad LaRose fired a snap shot over Ilya’s right shoulder, giving the Hurricanes another 2 goal lead just 2:03 later.

The Flyers then had two huge opportunities, but couldn’t convert on either PP.  On their third powerplay of the period, though, the Flyers scored after a great set-up by JVR which got the puck to a wide open Matt Read in front of the net.  It was Read’s fifth consecutive game in which he scored, and it was back to a one-goal game.

Yet again, though, Carolina got another goal with less than a minute and a half to go.  It was Ponikarovsky again and it was again a powerplay goal.  Ponikarovsky’s goal sealed the deal, and even earned him the 1st star spot in the game.
