Sorry for not posting here in a bit, internet has shot craps in my house. But the St Louis Blues win tonight in overtime 3-2 with the game winning dagger coming from Matt D’Agastini. Other goals coming from Jason Arnott and Captain Backes. The key out of this game was Halak sitting on the bench. For as much as I like Halak, for some reason the guy is playing with no confidence. Fortunately for the Blues back up goaltender Brian Elliott has stood on his head so far. Elliot has made timely saves and has seemed to have gotten the teams backing. One thing I have noticed so far this season is the support Elliott has had from his teammates.
Overall this game was definitely a statement game for the Blues. So early in the season I hate to say it was a must win, but it was exactly that. A loss could have sent this team further into a tail spin. It was only a season ago this team started 9-1-1. With added forward depth which has already been needed with Andy McDonald going down with a concussion and David Perron still out, you would think this team could replicate that hot start.
With this team having to claw their way back into games it just seems like that this season is going to hinge on the goaltending situation. The defense in this game had their moments of being completely inept again which is frightening for a team that last year was considered to be one of the best defensively. the first period in a half the Hurricanes owned the Blues defense. The still consistently inconsistent Blues did not turn in on until the middle of the second period.
The Blues had a season high 43 shots on goal, while promising something to note was the amount of shots getting blocked on the way to the net. The Blues have had the unfortunate habit of holding on to the puck to long and trying to make the cute passes. When the players that the Blues have should be a shoot first and pass later type team. There are a few notorious players that always start slow though, stars TJ Oshie, Patrik Berglund and Captain Backes to name a few. These 3 players need to find a way to turn it on.
Blues in Philly next, I will try and get a preview up if around a computer with the internet
