Team(s) Interested: Boston Bruins- The Boston Globe‘s Kevin Paul Dupont tweeted last week he’d heard “lingering chatter that Ray Whitney could be a Bruin.” With the retirement of Mark Recchi after winning the Stanley Cup last year, they lost some veteran presence in the change room. Whitney had 57 points last year as a 39 year old, so he clearly still has the ability to put pucks in the net. Whitney does have a No Movement Clause, so he would have to approve where he goes. As favorites to be repeat winners this year, I’m not sure why he wouldn’t want to play for the Bruins. As Lyle Richardson points out at The Hockey News, “Whitney is in the final season of his current contract and will earn $3 million against the cap…..the Bruins can afford after center Marc Savard’s $4 million salary comes off the books when he’s placed on long-term injury reserve.” It may be too early to make a trade now, but it would also be too late to wait until the trade deadline.
