Team Canada and New York Islanders superstar John Tavares has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.
Tavares was checked in to the boards during Canada’s 2-1 win over Latvia yesterday, and subsequently left the game for further assessment. An MRI scan on his knee revealed a torn MCL and torn meniscus, which may need surgery to repair.
He is expected to be ready for training camp in September, but the 23-year old’s absence is a significant blow for the Islanders and their slim play-off hopes this season. Tavares leads the franchise in goals (24) and points (66) this season, but a poor start to the year has seen the Isles sink to the bottom of the Metropolitan Division.
Matt Duchene is set to replace Tavares for Canada, who take on Team USA in the semi finals tomorrow.
