Slovakia’s weekend looked pretty good as a championship at the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge opened up the way for the more experienced team at the Slovakia Cup to win their own tournament and finish off the weekend with a perfect tournament record.

Slovakia typically puts in a good effort at the Slovakia Cup, so they made sure to go out and finish with two victories when the tournament began this year. Patrik Lusnak got the game going with about seven minutes left in the first when his shot beat Switzerland netminder Sandro Zurkirchen for the 1-0 goal. Then, six minutes later, Martin Bakos put Slovakia up by two heading into the intermission with a late period goal, one that Zurkirchen would have wanted back.

In the second, Thomas Mugs, the same guy who got Lusnak the first goal of the game, got one with six minutes off the clock in the second, making any chance of a Swiss comeback impossible. Slovakia tried their best to fend off Switzerland’s best efforts, and a goal by Rastislav Dej late in the third period helped as the team was able to hold on for the 4-0 victory after 60 minutes of play.

On Friday, Slovakia narrowly beat Belarus 2-1, peppering Dmitri Milchakov with 42 shots in a game where Belarus’s netminder was too tough to beat. Belarus did finish with the silver medal, however, as their 3-1 victory on Saturday over Switzerland was good enough to grab the three points they needed.
