The first day of the elimination rounds saw team USA and team Russia kick things off in Montreal at the Bell Centre, both teams fighting to move on to the next round. Unfortunately for  the US, things would not go as planned as Russia would skate away with the victory, moving on to the next round.

GAME RUNDOWN

In the opening period, the Russian squad would take an early 1-0 on the 5-on-3 power-play with Ivan Barashev, a St. Louis Blues prospect, would score the goal.

Mid-way through the first period, we would see Russia take their third power-play of the game. The American team has had a tough time staying out of the box, and it costed them early in. But the US did manage to successfully kill their third penalty of the game.

Just after Russia got off their fourth power-play of the game, they would extend their lead to 2-0 late in the period with Alexander Sharov notching the goal.

The Americans would not be able to get on the board in the first period, and they would pay for their mistakes of going to the box four times – giving Russia five power-play opportunities. And what did Russia do? They would convert, going up 2-0 after twenty minutes of play.

In the middle frame, the Americans would cut Russia’s lead in half on the two-man advantage with Tony DeAngelo blasting a shot from the point. The US team would remain on the power-play and would have another opportunity to tie the game.

But after forty minutes of play, Russia would lead 2-1 and the American squad still having trouble staying out of the box as they have accumulated seven penalties over two periods of play.

The Russian team would start the third period on a good note, as they would head to the power-play for their 8th time, and would extend their lead to 3-1. Carolina Hurricanes prospect Sergey Tolchinsky would be the goal scorer.

At the midway mark of the third, Zach Werenski would score a big goal for the US, after a simple wrist shot from the point that would beat the Russian goaltender high above the blocker side.

The Americans would take a time out with 31 seconds remaining in the period, in hopes of tying the game with their netminder out of the net, and a man on for the extra attacker.

But, the USA would not tie the game, and the Russians would win!

So with the 3-2 victory, Russia will now move on and will face the winner of the Sweden / Finland game. Team USA has been eliminated.
