For the first time in their short history, Qatar will advance to the finals of a hockey tournament thanks to a 5-3 victory over Kuwait.

Kuwait came into the tournament as the second top team behind the United Arab Emirates, who won their semi-final game 5-0 against Oman. After defeating Qatar 7-4, earlier in the tournament, it looked like the team would easily take the victory in the semi-finals on Monday. That wasn’t the case, however, as a surprising 5-3 victory was all it took to secure their first ever appearance in a tournament final.

With a 10-0 loss to UAE late last week, it’s very unlikely that the hosts from Qatar will be able to take the gold tomorrow afternoon. What is certain, however, is that they will be able to take their second ever medal at an international event, having beaten Oman in the bronze medal game a year ago to take the third place title.

Qatar became an official member of the IIHF back in 2012, joining Jamaica at the time as the newest participants. Qatar will play in the Challenge Cup of Asia for the first time in Division I, the second group for the developmental tournament. UAE will play in the top division of the tournament, but the Division III World Championship squad will look to take their fourth straight title at the Gulf Cup with a victory on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Oman and Kuwait will play in the bronze medal game, a rematch of Kuwait’s 17-1 victory to begin the tournament.

About The Author

Steven took a different route towards his hockey interests. Starting out as a big Habs fan, he started to gravitate towards the more obscure levels of hockey, such as the low level tournaments in Asia, strange club matches between teams most people in North America can’t pronounce, and even some 3am contests between Bulgaria and New Zealand. Aside from his love for strange hockey events, Steven occasionally acts as a mediocre ball hockey goalie following a failed attempt at making it to the NHL as a fourth line house league grinder. Beyond hockey, Steven is an avid racing fan and loves to chat about NASCAR, F1, Indycar, you name it. Oh, and don’t get him started on music. That is, unless you want the whole history of metal and a guitar lesson. Currently, Steven is a credentialed media member with the Mississauga Steelheads of the OHL, as well as with the Oakville Blades of the OJHL. Steven has also hosted the television show "The Hockey House" on TVCogeco in Ontario, as well as a segment under the same with on LeafsTV in Toronto. Home page: http://www.thehockeyhouse.net
