The Philippines men’s national hockey team were crowned hockey champions at the HKAHC Invitational Amateur Tournament in Hong Kong this weekend, defeating the Japanese Mitsubishi Corp club 3-1 in the final game.
Participating in a nine team event with teams coming from places like Qatar, Macau and Chinese Taipei, the small hockey nation won all but one game to finish with a 4-1 record, the best of any team at the tournament.
Philippines doesn’t have much of a hockey history, but this definetly puts them on the right track. A few weeks back, a team consisting of kids 13 and under participated in the Malaysia Invitational Ice Hockey tournament for the Philippines, securing the win to give them two titles in one month alone.
The Philippines currently have one league, the Manila Ice Hockey League, with players from ranging from hometown heroes to North American ex-pats. The program hopes to gain recognition from the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission, as well as eventually applying for IIHF status.
