Former Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Mark Owuya has signed with HC Lugano for the Spengler Cup.

A backup goaltender with Medvescak Zagreb at last year’s Spengler Cup, Owuya will look to get back into hockey shape with a couple of games at the annual tournament in Davos, Switzerland. Yesterday, it was announced that Owuya would join the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies, but will wait until after New Year’s to make his debut with the club. He last played with competitive hockey with Zagreb, putting up a 2.98 GAA and .898 SP% with the club in 13 games.

A few years ago, the Maple Leafs signed Owuya to a contract, letting him split time between the AHL’s Toronto Marlies and ECHL’s Reading Royals. He didn’t accomplish much in the time, electing to return to Europe, where he has played ever since.

Lugano will begin the Spengler Cup with a 9:00 am EST start against reigning DEL champions, Adler Mannheim. Owuya will act as the backup to 21-year-old Latvian goalie Elvis Merzlikins, considered to be a rising young star in the sport.
