Edmonton Oilers Defenseman Andy Sutton has been suspended 8 games by the NHL for his hit to the head on Carolina Hurricanes Forward Alexei Ponikarovsky. While delivering the hit, Sutton’s feet left the ground delivering an extra high hit.

This is not the first time Sutton (age 36) has been suspended. Earlier this season, Sutton was suspended for 5 games after delivering a hit to the head on Colorado Avalanche Rookie Forward Gabriel Landeskog on October 28th. On January 20th, 2010, Sutton was also suspended for 2 games after delivering an illegal check on Penguins Forward Pascal Dupuis. Lastly, he was suspended for 4 games for another hit to the head incident while he was playing for the Atlanta Thrashers in 2005.

In 16 games this season, Sutton has posted 3 points while adding on a total of 50 penalty minutes.

Here is Brendan Shanahan’s reasoning behind the 8 game suspension of Andy Sutton
