Unrestricted free agency doesn’t start for another hour, but news has already come out that the Ottawa Senators long time captain, Daniel Alfredsson will not be returning to the Sens this season. Reports are surfacing that Alfredsson will sign with the Detroit Red Wings.
The rumor is Alfredsson’s base salary will be around 3.5M but he could get upwards of 5.0M with bonuses. No official word on the length of the contract but I would imagine it’ll be a one or two year deal. Alfredsson is now 40 years old and will be 41 before the mid-way point of next season. It’s easy to see that he still has the ability to play the game at a high level last season, but we don’t know how much he has left in the tank.
The transition should be easy for Alfie, as there are many Swedish players on Detroit. Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall and Johan Franzen are just some fellow country men. Not only will familiar faces help Alfredsson, the coaching style is much the same for Paul MacLean as it will be for Mike Babcock. MacLean did work under Babcock for many years before taking the head coaching position in Ottawa.
