Calgary Flames Forward Rene Bourque has been suspended for 5 games by the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety for his illegal elbow that he delivered to Washington Capitals Forward Nicklas Backstrom in last night’s 3-1 loss. He will forfeit a total amount of $203,252.05K in those 5 games.

 

After having a phone hearing with Bourque, Brendan Shanahan suspended him the maximum amount of games (5) that you can suspend a player over a phone hearing. A big reason behind the 5 game ban is the fact that Bourque is a repeat offender. Just last month, Bourque was suspended for 2 games for delivering an illegal hit from behind on Chicago Blackhawks Defenseman Brent Seabrook.

 

In 38 games this season, Bourque has registered a total of 16 points (13 Goals, 3 Assists) to go along with a -3 rating in the plus/minus category.
