Team(s) Involved: Montreal Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres- Renaud Lavoie of RDS (english translation) recently wondered if Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier might engage in a roster “fire sale” in the coming weeks if the club continues playing the way they have been, suggesting pending UFAs like forwards Andrei Kostitsyn, Travis Moen, Mathieu Darche and defenseman Chris Campoli, Hal Gill and Yannick Weber could be shopped. Weber, Campoli and Kostitsyn have been in trade rumors the entire season, as there is little chance they will return. If the Canadiens haven’t improved and gained ground in the standings by mid-month I believe they’ll start seriously entertaining offers for the players mentioned. Scott Gomez, the player no Canadien fans want whatsoever, cannot and will not be traded. The best bet is to bury him the minors, or the get nothing out of him (which is Pretty much what’s happening now) and buy him out. The team will be missing out on a lot of talent by spending $7M+ on a player who doesn’t produce anything. Montreal could, and should, trade the UFA’s for picks, and with Moen on a career year pace, trading him right now is not a bad idea whatsoever, as the price could go down once he slows down. It has been suggested that Buffalo could be interested in trading Derek Roy for a defenseman. While Hal Gill for Derek Roy straight up won’t happen, Buffalo could really use a defenseman with playoffs experience, and his size on the back end with Robyn Regher and Tyler Myers would make the team deadly.
