The Abbotsford Heat have signed tough guy forward Trevor Gillies.
Gillies was signed to bring a physical edge to the baby Flames. In 57 NHL games, Gillies recorded 261 PIMs to go along with a measly two goals and three points. In 380 AHL games the Cambridge, Ontario native posted eight goals and 23 points to go along with a whopping 1,536 PIMs . Gillies has played in five games this season with the ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears, recording 21 penalty minutes. Additionally, in seven games this season with HIFK Helsinki, he didn’t record a single point, but did sit in the penalty box for 97 minutes.
With Brian McGrattan and and Kevin Westgarth already on the Flames, there isn’t a need for Gillies to get called up to the big club. Most may argue there isn’t a place for Gillies in professional hockey in the first place. Considering his image of being one of the most intimidating forces in recent memory, Gillies could eventually find his way back in a limited role in the NHL, but it’s unlikely.
